ACEN launching new Vietnam wind farm in 1Q
2/23/2022 8:45:00 PM

Ayala-led ACEN is looking to activate a new wind farm in Vietnam within the first quarter, it said on Monday.

The Lac Hoa & Hoa Dong Wind farm, located in Soc Trang province would be ACEN’s sixth renewable project in the country. The 60-megawatt (MW) plant, developed in collaboration with UPC Renewables, will feature the tallest wind turbines in the Southeast Asian nation with a hub height of 162 meters.

Last year, ACEN launched three wind farms in Vietnam, adding 380MW to the country’s power grid.

The company switched on in late November its 40MW Mui Ne Phase 2 wind farm in Binh Thuan province (photo above). The facility currently carries turbines with a rotor diameter of 158 meters, the largest for an offshore wind project in Asia. It is also the first project to use two-piece assembled blades, a kind of technology that could boost the turbine’s efficiency and at the same time, lower the costs of energy.

Before that, ACEN opened its 252MW Quang Binh wind farm, which could produce 648 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power annually, enough to provide power to 270,000 homes. The wind farm features wind turbines at a hub height of 145 meters.

ACEN also launched the operations of the 88MW Ninh Thuan wind farm in October, seen to produce around 327 GWh per year, which could power up 136,000 homes.

“Powering three energy plants in 2021 was a significant accomplishment that we could not have achieved without the collaboration with our partners and strong support from the government of Vietnam,” ACEN President and CEO Eric Francia said in a statement.

ACEN currently has 3,000MW of attributable capacity across the Asia-Pacific region, with 18,000MW of renewable energy (RE) projects in its pipeline. The company aims to have an all-RE portfolio by 2025.
